A dark comedy that tells the story of God inviting a human to meet with them for the first time

Waiting for God. oh., written by Lèona McLoughlin is a dark comedy that tells the story of God inviting a human to meet with them for the first time. There are more similarities between God and humans than we think.

Lèona McLoughlin is such a clever, witty writer. There were many subtle references from the Bible that were added in to this modern play that really made it whole. The attention to detail was insane and created for some great imagery. This play really forced the audience to think about who they believe God to be. I like how the play painted God out to be human just like us, who also makes mistakes. To humanise such a concept must have been a hard thing to do, but McLoughlin excelled in doing just that. Religious people can often take their frustrations out on God as to why things are not perfect in this world, but seeing the way God in this story was written, it made you emphasise with the creator.

Erica Tavares Kouassi, who played the character of God, did such an amazing job at showing all different sides of God that people believe the mighty being to be. Kouassi, showed God’s strength, mighty whilst also showing his pain and suffering. It was very eye-opening as it provided a new perspective on the higher power. Kouassi showed so much grace in her performance. It was very clear from the beginning that she was in control of the realm she had created. The comfortability and ease she had made the audience feel safe and welcomed in her presence. She had so much power over the space which allowed her to play God so effortlessly. Kouassi’s comedic timing was impeccable, watching her play around with different dynamics was such a joy to watch. Her sarcasm and witty edge had the audience roaring with laughter. Kouassi really owned this character and made it her own. Lèona McLoughlin, who played the character of babe, did an excellent job selling a compelling performance. The journey arc of her character was really interesting to watch as she went from a non believer from somebody who was starting to question, themselves as well as God.

I thought it was very smart to have an empty stage with very minimal lighting. Having God be the only one who could control the lighting in the space was very effective, it made for a magical, eerie atmosphere. The lighting was very intimate which aided with the themes of the play. Both actors filled the space with so much energy. The ball never dropped, there was never a dull moment, they both were picking up on each other’s cues which kept the ball constantly rolling throughout the piece. I loved the audience interaction in this piece. Every time God connected with the audience, it was justified. It portrayed the message that God was trying to reach out to us all.

  1. The title of this play had me curious to find out what it was about. Straight away I found myself absorbed. I was amused by different parts of the writing and it felt really relevant (even though I’m not a spiritual person)
I was literally emotionally moved as the babe character came to her own towards the end of the play and powerfully made me think about myself in today’s world. Powerful writing! If you get the chance, go and see this play!
