A merry and heartfelt multimedia gigglefest
Ted Hill is a completely normal comedian, thank you very much, and he has the data to prove it.
In a show laced with his trademark multimedia elements, Ted takes us on a meticulously planned journey through his formative years, self-discovery and family relationships. After studying Netflix specials, he knows what makes up a “normal” comedy performance, and over the course of an hour, we tick those off in a charmingly comedic way, whilst maintaining the heart of his message. More tender moments are handled with a deftness of touch, and carefully balanced against the next laugh (of which there were many). Again, he had the data to prove the laughs are there.
The multimedia aspects were impressively diverse – far from just being a show based on PowerPoint, we had preprogrammed Bonobo keyboards, AI-python scripts, an on-stage camera, a voiceover and an unexpected fraternal addition to the stage.
Unfortunately we did have a slight technical malfunction, which led to some unexpected technology-free crowdwork (shout out to audience member Ella for saving the day with her charger), but this was handled remarkably well by Ted, and once back on track, we sailed through the rest of the show with aplomb.
For such a well-planned show, some of the crowd interaction elements did drag on slightly, and might want to be condensed each section a little, or drop one of the elements – albeit still very enjoyable and in-fitting with the rest of the show. We finished very strongly with some insightful comments, and an unexpected but endearing tip for exotic animal care.
As the self-proclaimed third-best known Ted Hill, he deserves a far higher position on that list – highly recommended for a merry romp of an hour.
