What does it take to make a clown?
Fearless and unbridled clowning comedian Yozi brings their new show “No Babies in the Sauna” to Edinburgh Fringe for an hour of unkempt French accents, inane stories about towels and some sort of liquid that looks suspiciously like milk.
Yozi’s performance style edges on the ridiculous, often trying to connect with the audience to either much or little avail, both outcomes which result in hilarity. Their ability make light of any situation is commendable. To the clowning, Yozi’s ability to facially contort calls for heightened moments of hilarity, while their body movements are uncanny and unpredictable.
The weaving together of multiple plot threads, if plot can be used as a term here, keeps the pace of the show from going stale. Dabbling between a story of how they found their clown mother and joined clown school, all told with an incredibly over the top French accent, all the way to a simply silly story about towels. But the titular train of thought, should babies be allowed in a sauna, is explored with the assistance of AI to disastrous consequences.
Yozi’s stage presence is captivating and endlessly hilarious, but the overall structure of the show does not uphold its 60 minute runtime.
