Champions of the hit ITV series Mamma Mia! I Have A Dream, Stevie Doc and Tobias Turley, will perform in an exclusive concert at Cadogan Hall on Saturday 10th May. Presented by Olivier Award nominated production company Lambert Jackson Productions, rising stars Stevie and Tobias will bring audiences’ favourite musical theatre duets to life for one evening only this spring. We sat down with them both to talk about their reunion and upcoming performance.
How does it feel to reunite for this special concert at Cadogan Hall? What are you most looking forward to about performing together again?
T: It’s so nice to be back with Stevie especially for such an amazing occasion. I think the thing I’m most excited about is to revisit some of the songs we’ve sung together in the past. Obviously without spoiling the set-list we are going to be doing some numbers that mean a lot to both me and Stevie.
S: I’m so excited! Cadogan Hall is such a beautiful venue and it feels like the perfect fit for Toby and me to perform some of our most iconic duets! Toby is a wonderful performer and I’m really looking forward to having a bit of fun with him on stage again!
Having shared the stage in the West End, how has your on-stage chemistry evolved over time? Are there particular moments or performances that have strengthened your dynamic as a duo?
T: People often came up to us at stage door and praise myself and Stevie for our chemistry. And I always respond the same way. Because me and Stevie had been close friends for nearly 8 months before taking the stage together, I believe that our friendship made it so easy to find our chemistry. Not everyone gets that amount of time before a show to find that relationship. It came really easy to us I’d say.
S: We were very fortunate and the friendship we developed during the TV show and rehearsals meant we already had such a great bond before we started Mamma Mia and it just grew from there!
The upcoming concert promises to bring favourite musical theatre duets to life. How did you select the pieces for this performance, and are there any songs that hold special significance for you both?
T: As I write this we are still fine tuning the set list, but it’s full of songs that mean a lot to not only ourselves, but the wider scope of musical theatre fans as well. Selecting the pieces is hard because there are hundreds of millions of songs out there. So generally we thought of a section we’d like to do and then found songs that we think suited us as a pair most.
S: We obviously had to include our most iconic songs we’ve sung together throughout the TV show and Mamma Mia and then we also added in some others that we really wanted to perform together.
Your performances have resonated with audiences both on-screen and on-stage. What do you believe is the key to creating a strong connection with your audience, and how do you plan to bring that energy to the Cadogan Hall concert?
S: It’s fun to watch people having fun and that’s exactly what we’re going to do and we’ll encourage the audience to have fun with us!
On the night, you will be joined by some special guests – what do you think these exclusive appearances will add to the concert?
T: Oh they’re going to add so much fun to our concert. Jacob and Esme are 2 wonderful friends of mine so it’s really an honour to have them there with us. We’ve got some great ideas of how to use them as best as we can and hopefully the audience feel that.
S: Esme Bowdler and Jacob Fowler are phenomenal performers and I can’t wait to do some really fun and exciting numbers with them both. And of course we can’t have 3 ex Heathers cast members without a Heathers number or 2.
Do you have plans for future collaborations? Are there specific roles or productions you’d love to tackle together in the future?
T: I truly believe me and Stevie will work together numerous more times in the future. If they ever do a Tangled stage show in London I think me and Stevie would make a brilliant Rapunzel and Flynn.
S: I’d love to keep working with Toby though there’s nothing in the works at the minute! Originating a role in a new musical with Toby would be so much fun and I think we’d work so well together creating new characters.
