solid stand-up from a unique perspective
Matthew Mckew’s stand-up hour is presented from a unique perspective. Following a brain-injury, he has experienced life and work through a different lens with a Functioning Neurological Disorder, and using comedy to help rebuild his cognitive skills.
This is worth mentioning up-front, because none of this would be apparent to the crowd unless you’re made aware of it, which is something Matthew does with skill and care as the hour progresses. With a personable cheeky chappy air about him, we start with a fairly lengthy section on getting to know where the audience is from – this is a packed-out show, which is an accomplishment in itself.
We bounce through topics including Matthew’s work life – from labouring to working with kids, and the different types of parents (which resonated well with the teacher in the room). There’s a fun section about when he worked as a tour guide and a particularly memorable online review, and his life in New Zealand, and how he may or may not have come about his head injury. This is all told with a warmth and elicits a lot of laughs throughout. Perhaps not all the jokes and punchlines land as he would like (some about his grand-parents land with good-natured groans than giggles), but it’s a good convinial atmosphere.
We have a couple of audience games used as cognitive tests, tempered with reflections on the support NHS is able to provide, which are used as a nice way to break up the set too. He touches lightly on the support (or lack thereof) and understandably this isn’t a comfortable topic, but would be interesting to see this expanded upon in the future.
We finish with some reflection from Matthew and about how far he has come. The fact that he has been here at the Fringe for a full month, with 2 solo shows, a packed out venue, and no notes, is a testament to his work ethic and love of comedy. You can’t help but want him to succeed, and on the basis of this performance, there’s no doubt that he will continue to do so.
