REVIEW: Sisters of Mersey

Reading Time: 2 minutesSisters of Mersey at Liverpool's Royal Court transports audiences back to the 1980s with its exaggerated portrayal of two nuns who believe they are identical twins despite their different appearances. The show draws heavily from Shakespeare, Sister Act, and The Sound of Music, with numerous hidden references for avid theatregoers to spot.

REVIEW: DORIAN: The Musical

Reading Time: 2 minutesDORIAN: The Musical is the brand new musical showing at Southwark Playhouse, inspired by the world renowned novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde.

Not the first adaptation by a long shot and surely not the last. The novel centres on a man, who sells his soul in order to retain his youth and beauty, with a portrait of himself becoming the victim of his hedonism.

In this version , with book and direction by Linnie Reedman and music & lyrics by Joe Evans, the pretence is similar, but we are thrust into the world of a viral, orphaned, illegitimate, rock star who at the age of 21 is picked up by a record label and thrust into the world of sin.

REVIEW: Medea Gosperia

Reading Time: 3 minutesThere is nothing better than a Greek tragedy to stir up the emotions and this adaptation certainly did that! The retelling of Medea Gosperia in a contemporary musical brought out Medea’s sass, Jason’s misogyny and the painful tragic moments befitting of a Greek tragedy. The story was well told, and I really felt the hardship that Medea was going through. The moment where Medea came out in a colourful change of costume after the interval was a flourishing moment for the woman who had been so badly betrayed. And by the time we got to the end, half of the cast were covered in fake blood, which is the definition of a good Greek tragedy!
